When the municipality of Ellerau decided to construct a biogas plant, the initial concept intended to provide the outdoor swimming pool of the community with renewable heat. However, by now not only the local outdoor pool is receiving its heat from the district solution with the biogas plant – additionally, municipal buildings and other facilities are supplied with heat from the biogas plant such as the primary school, a senior home complex, the municipal nurseries and a tennis court as well as a whole residential construction area.
Moreover, a third of Ellerau’s households can be provided with electricity from the very same plant. The biogas plant is fed with agricultural biomass and after the fermentation process the digestate is used as fertilizer.
CO2 savings achieved through this project add up to 1,000,000 kg or 1,000 tons annually.
