Panicum virgatum L., commonly known as switchgrass, is a grass native to North America whose culture is still restricted in Europe. It is a perennial crop implanted fora minimum duration of 10 years.

Switchgrass presents opportunities similar to those of miscanthus: mulching for parks and gardens or for market gardening, animal litter or agrofuel. Incorporation into biocomposites or transformation into bioethanol is currently under research and development.
