Syngas is a synthesis gas obtained through gasification process. More precisely, syngas is a thermochemical reaction consisting of the decomposition, by the action of heat, of a solid carbonaceous fuel (wood, other biomass) into a gaseous mixture.
Syngas, what is it made of?
Syngas is mainly composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Other gases, such as methane, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide or steam, are produced in varying amounts depending on the quality of the process.
The syngas can be used in several ways, most of them being energy:
- Fuel for the production of heat;
- Fuel for the production of electricity in gas turbines or gas engines or cogeneration installations;
- A basic product for the chemical synthesis of hydrogen, methanol and methane (Synthetic Natural Gas – GNS);
- Source for the production of synthetic biofuel.
However, the gas must be purified before being used to remove unwanted co-products.
